How the subsidy works

  1. Your income is compared to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). FPL varies by household size. Expressed as a percentage of FPL, your income determines what the government expects you to contribute toward health insurance.
  2. Your expected contribution is capped at a sliding scale. The percentage of income you’re expected to contribute ranges from about 2% at 100% FPL up to 9.83% at 300–400% FPL. Above 400% FPL, you don’t qualify for a federal subsidy at all.
  3. The difference becomes your tax credit. The benchmark Silver plan premium in your area minus your expected contribution = your monthly Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC). You can apply the APTC to any Marketplace plan.
  4. Plans cheaper than the benchmark cost you less. Apply your APTC to a Bronze plan or a Gold plan priced below the benchmark Silver, and in many Florida counties the net cost is $0 for subsidy-eligible lower-income households.

Note on 2027 plan year: The enhanced ARP/IRA premium tax credits have lapsed. The original ACA subsidy rules apply, including the 400% FPL subsidy cliff. If Congress reinstates enhancements, we’ll update this calculator immediately.
