Dental & vision

Dental and vision coverage, alongside the rest of your health plan.

Most health insurance — including Original Medicare and many ACA plans — covers little or no routine dental and vision care. Standalone dental and vision policies fill that gap.

Why standalone dental and vision matter

  • Original Medicare does not cover routine dental cleanings, fillings, dentures, eyeglasses, or routine eye exams. Some Medicare Advantage plans include limited dental and vision benefits, but not all do — and the included coverage varies widely by plan.
  • ACA marketplace plans include pediatric dental and vision benefits for children, but adult dental and vision coverage is generally not included unless you add a separate plan.

A standalone dental or vision plan lets you build the coverage you actually need, regardless of which main health plan you have.

How standalone dental insurance works

Most standalone dental plans cover three categories of care, with different cost-sharing for each:

  • Preventive care — cleanings, exams, X-rays. Often covered at 100%.
  • Basic care — fillings, extractions, simple procedures.
  • Major care — crowns, bridges, dentures, oral surgery.

Plans typically have an annual maximum (the most the plan will pay in a year) and may have waiting periods before major care is covered.

How standalone vision insurance works

Most vision plans cover an annual eye exam, with allowances toward frames, lenses, or contact lenses on a 12- or 24-month cycle. Some include discounts on LASIK and other elective procedures.

How we help

We work with multiple dental and vision carriers, including options that pair specifically with Medicare and options designed for ACA gaps. A licensed El-Mag agent will compare networks, annual maximums, and waiting periods so you don’t end up surprised at the dentist’s chair.
