Educational estimate only. Eligibility edge cases (railroad retirement, government employment coverage, specific SSDI determinations) can affect your actual enrollment path. A licensed agent can confirm your specific situation.
The four Medicare eligibility paths
- Age 65+ with U.S. citizenship or 5+ years of continuous lawful permanent residency. The most common path.
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months. Automatic enrollment in Parts A and B in the 25th month.
- End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Coverage typically begins the 4th month of regular dialysis (or sooner with a transplant / home dialysis training).
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Medicare coverage begins the same month SSDI benefits start — no 24-month wait.
For deeper detail on each path, see the Medicare for people under 65 with disabilities guide.
