Medicare Supplement Plan G.
Plan G is one of the standardized Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans available in most states. Like all Medigap plans, Plan G’s benefits are standardized by federal law — every Plan G sold by every carrier covers the same set of benefits. What differs between carriers is premium and underwriting practices.
What Plan G covers
Plan G covers most of what Original Medicare doesn’t, including:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (after Medicare-approved amounts)
- Part B coinsurance and copayments
- The first three pints of blood
- Part A hospice care coinsurance
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Part A deductible
- Part B excess charges
- 80% of foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits)
The one cost-sharing element Plan G does not cover is the annual Part B deductible. After you meet that deductible, Plan G covers the cost-sharing for Medicare-approved services.
Who Plan G fits
Plan G generally fits beneficiaries who:
- Want predictable out-of-pocket costs after meeting the small annual Part B deductible
- Want freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare nationwide
- Are willing to pay a higher monthly premium for that flexibility
Plan G versus Plan F
Plan F was historically the most comprehensive Medigap plan, but Plan F is no longer available to people who became Medicare-eligible on or after January 1, 2020. Plan G is now the most-comprehensive option for new Medicare enrollees, and the difference between Plan F and Plan G is essentially the Part B deductible.

How a licensed agent helps
Plan G premiums vary widely between carriers, even though benefits are identical. A licensed El-Mag agent shops Plan G across our supplement carriers to find the lowest premium for your zip code, age, and tobacco status. See how we compare Plan G across carriers.
